A tummy tuck is ideal for the patient who is in good health and at a reasonably healthy weight, but struggles to tone the midsection. Perhaps a pregnancy or aging has caused the abdominal area to become lax and sag. A tummy tuck will safely and effectively remove excess fat and skin, as well as tighten the abdominal musculature – resulting in a slim, toned tummy. Candidates should refrain from smoking and not plan to become pregnant or lose a significant amount of weight after the surgery. During surgery, the patient is put under general anesthesia. The plastic surgeon makes an incision right above the pubic area, which extends from hip bone to hip bone. The surgeon then separates the skin from the underlying muscle, and tightens the abdominal muscles, stitching them into place. Excess fat is removed, sometimes via liposuction techniques. Stretch marks on the skin of the lower abdomen may be removed, and the appearance of remaining stretch marks may improve as the remaining skin is tightened.
