I am having a Tummy tuck + lipo next month and I wonder if general anesthesia is the only way to go

YES ! This is a major surgery, esp. if you're having MR with the tummy tuck. I was in surgery for about 6+ hours when I had a mini S lift (easy and quick) plus tummy tuck + MR. I was in surgery at 8:30 out at 4:30. I wouldn't want to be under anything but general for something this involved. I've had IV only for most procedures, this was different. Go for the max. Recovery is long and follow Dr's instructions carefully. Do not overdo it to soon ! My mistake. Good luck , Nancy

A tummy tuck and liposuction definitely require general anesthesia as the area of surgical repair is too large for standard local anesthesia. General anesthesia has become increasing well tolerated due to improved anesthetic agents, anti-nausea medication and more sophisticated monitoring. Patients should be in good general health and plan to have their surgery at an accredited surgical facility with board certified anesthesiologists.
