Do I need a referral from dentist to go see an oral surgeon?

I have a pretty bad cavity and would like it taken out. After looking for an eternity I have found the perfect oral surgeon but do I need to have a referral to see him? I really don't want to waste time and money to go the dentist if I don't have too. Any advice about that?

How long does a typical wisdom teeth surgery last??

How long would it take to extract 4 wisdom teeth and 2 that are impacted? Under IV sedation. Thanks in advance!
