Default How to "bleach" dark skin lighter?

Hello,
I'm an African-American female in my late 30s and I've noticed that many African -Americans in entertainment have much lighter skin tone now than they did when they first began their careers. (Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jackson being the first that come to mind.) How is this skin lightening achieved?
Thank you.

Yeah why is that, that darker ethnic women can't just have their true skin color in entertainment? It's unfortunate that still in 2008 the consensus pressure is to "Westernize" your appearance. We're the only country that does that.

Thank you! Do you know how long the process takes to see results? Are they instant or does it take weeks or months of treatments?

How about the opposite? What if you're a scrawny pale white kid like me and want to actually have some pigment to my skin? haha

Top 3 Skin Whitening Techniques

* Moisturizing and cleansing is extremely beneficial for maintaining your skin tone. Due to excess exposure to sun, aging, air and water pollution, our membrane collects lots of unwanted particles, which should be cleaned properly for attaining a flawless appearance. You can apply homemade sandalwood and rosewater paste for rejuvenating your skin.

* The condition of your skin is decided by the food you eat. You should preferably eat lots of high fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables. They contain anti-oxidants which can easily flush out toxins from your body. The removal of toxins rejuvenates the entire health which consequently replenishes your covering.

* Meladerm is considered to be an effective skin whitening cream which claims to diminish dark spots and discoloration in just two weeks. This cream comes from the house of Civant Skin care. This bleaching cream contains nature-based ingredients such kojic acid, lemon juice extract, licorice extract, mulberry extract, bearberry extract, lactic acid and Alpha Arbutin. All these ingredients not only whitens your membrane but also visibly reduce the appearance of skin complications such as uneven skin tones, dark elbow, birth marks, old scars, freckles etc. The best part of this product is that it doesn't contain Hydroquinone, mercury or steroids.
