Hi Everyone,

First, I'm so glad to have found this forum. I've read each and every thread about scar revision. It's great to read your stories. And it was helpful to see Mr. Z's pics. Thanks for posting.

I'm consulting a couple plastic surgeons this month to see what they say about revising this scar I have. As you can see, it's an abdominal scar, about 8 inches long. I got this scar when I was 7 years old. I had to have emergency surgery after a car accident. Now, I'm 26 and I hope to find a surgeon who can make it look better. I know it won't disappear, so if it could be made to appear thinner, that would be fantastic.

Concerns I have:
1. I wonder if the surgeons will try to dissuade me because I haven't been through a pregnancy. I don't plan on it, but if it ever happens, I wonder how it would stretch out and/or look worse.

2. I've found just two surgeons in South Florida who mentioned scar revision in their website. Anyone have any experience with other surgeons in FL and scar revisions?

Glad to hear my scar post is helpful.

My scar was very similar to yours before revision so expect similar results with a revision if all goes as planned.

I highly doubt a plastic surgeon will try and dissuade you from going through with it. They are in the business of making money. The first 4 months the scar tissue will stretch easily. The first year the scar will change a lot.

You have a skin type that might benefit from silicon scar sheets too. Those will take 3 or 6 months of 24/7 wearing them to see results. They don't work on olive skin like I have but your skin type looks like it would work.

Thanks, Mr. Z. I'm looking into the silicon sheets. Tomorrow, I go for my first consultation. I have another consultation in May with a different plastic surgeon. I think I'll keep posting to document the experience.

I had my first consult today with a local board certified plastic surgeon who has worked with local celebrities/models/entertainers. His office and staff were really nice. The first thing he said was, "I see you were in a car accident in 1991. Were you the driver or the passenger...?" Well, I was seven years old, I explained, so I couldn't have been driving. Duh! Not a good first impression. It was funny to watch him gather his thoughts after that comment.

Anyway, he examined the scar and he said he felt very confident that he could make it thinner, but that it could stretch after anyway. He would excise the scar and place stitches underneath the skin. He said I could do it under local anesthesia, local and twilight, or general anesthesia. The doctor's assistant quoted the fee as $2,050 - $2250. Surprisingly, I thought it would cost more.

At this point, I'm still thinking about actually going through with the procedure. I'm pretty sure I will not seek the services of this surgeon. I have another consult in May with another PS, so I'm not calling it quits just yet.

The price does seem reasonable ... maybe a little too reasonable.

The appearance of the scar can change post-op, so he was giving you honest and reliable info.

His approach sounds about right. Most of the stitching on mine was done under the skin but sutures are used externally. When the sutures came off after a week the scar line was virtually not there. The problem is that after a month or two the scar tissue will start to form and widen. Really it's during that time which determines if the outcome is successful.

That price is good. Real good. Besides the guy being an idiot about asking if you were the passenger what else did you not like about him?
