Closed rhinoplasty is actually the more advanced form of rhino. When the students learn they first learn open rhinoplasty which is as you can guess much easier. Only after they have perfected that do they learn closed, sometimes they never learn it at all.

So at the end of the day you have many plastic surgeons who learn open rhinoplasty and continue only using that and therefore becoming sufficient in it. However only the most advanced surgeons have mastered closed. Don't get me wrong, there are open rhinoplasty surgeons who do a better job than closed rhinoplasty surgeons and vice-versa. It all depends on that talent of the surgeon. You can have good results with both methods, but also bad results with both.

I can tell you the recovery time and swelling is much shorter with closed. You are looking at only a fraction of the time you get with open. However open allegedly gives you more control over the tip. Closed is a quicker procedure than open. At the end of the day I think it all depends on the surgeons talent which is more important than the method.

I agree it all depends on the plastic surgeon. In some cases it is better to go with a closed if you have a rather simple rhino/septoplasty. However if you have a very difficult case most surgeons prefer open as it makes things easier. I think this debate between the medical community will continue for quite some time as I don't think there is any right answer as it needs to be decided on a case by case basis which method is better.

I've heard that open rhino allows more control over the tip of the nose???

Well the nice thing about closed rhinoplasty is there's no scars. With open the doctor chops up your columella (that skin that sperates the nostrils) with either a 'z' cut or straight line... those don't always heal to the point of invisibility depending on your skin type.

I've heard that lately surgeons are leaning more towards open. Maybe it is because it's easier but that might not be a bad thing if it makes their work easier. But the big drawback on that is the longer recovery time as already mentioned.

lately all the talk is about open rhinoplasty it seems like but i think a lot of that is because there are very few surgeons that are highly skilled in closed rhino. to become proficient in it you need at least a couple decades of experience doing them. but even if you're not dealing with cream of the crop surgeon they still can do closed good if its for a simple thing like dorsal hump removal and whose nasal tip doesn't need any changes. the swelling last a lot shorter with this and the truth is doctors arent honest will how long swelling lasts, it lasts a long time, even years sometimes! closed usually doesn't. there probably are only a couple dozen plastic surgeons in the country that can pull off difficult closed rhino operations and have an amazing result.

You should be able to find a plastic surgeon that can do everything with closed rhinoplasty including the tip. Not many can do that but there are a few my whole thing I don't like about open is that you're swollen forever! You can get open rhino and your nose will still look like crap a year or two later from the swelling. tHat's why I like closed because you heal a lot quicker. I don't think any of the celebrity could possibly be doing open because they would be swollen for so long and not able to work I'm sure they all do closed that's the only thing that makes sense. I think open is the easier way out for a lot of docs IMO.

I wonder..does anyone know the difference in the time period for swelling? Someone mentioned that closed rhino doesn't swell for as long...not that it matters. I already had mine :-P And I needed alot of work done for it to be just closed.

That's true about closed. The swelling/recovery is a lot shorter since it's not as traumatic as a procedure. I've read a lot of celebrities opt for closed rhinoplasty for that exact reason. They say they gotta do open if you need a lot of done but there's still a few top plastic surgeons out there who say they can still do all their rhinoplasty closed.
