Default Weird family reaction to rhinoplasty

Hello, everyone! I had rhinoplasty (with septoplasty) done 17 days ago, and the cast and sutures were removed 9 days ago. Already I have many improvements. I can breathe out of both sides of my nose again. The piece of cartilage that was literally sticking out of the side of my nose (think about 10 seconds before that creature comes bursting out of the guy's chest in Alien...that's about how it looked) is gone and the area is all smooth. The tip of my nose is now about an inch and a quarter higher than it used to be, so it's not hanging down over my upper lip anymore. And my profile is much softer. The only area that is still very swollen and hard to judge is the lower half of my nose from the front (including the tip). My surgeon said this is normal and the swelling will gradually decrease, which is fine. But yesterday, I saw my parents, sister, and niece for the first time since having the surgery, and as soon as I walked through the door all I heard was--from everyone--"Your nose looks exactly the same." Now, I know logically it doesn't look the same. And I also know logically that the still-swollen area will improve and decrease in size over the next weeks and months. But it made me feel really down. Everyone acted as if it was a joke and I had wasted my time and money doing this. I was so happy with my results and progress so far, but now I feel depressed. Has anyone else ever had this experience with family members after surgery?

Hey,
don't worry about what your family or anyone else was saying.
I assume they said this to you, because they felt like you didn't need the surgery on first place. Which I am sure you don't agree with because you had your nose done. As long as you like it and you are happy with the improvements, is all that matters.

I had my rhino about 8 months ago and no one has ever said anything to me, and I am taking about the people who knew I had surgery - they either think it looks the same or it looks worse. But no one said, "hey I like your nose now. It looks so much better." I sort of thought I would get a feedback. But again, the difference in my nose is not huge as it appears to be with yours. I had a slight bump. I wanted a slimmer tip, but it's not really that much slimmer than I had hoped for.
Your nose will definitely go down in the next few months. If you like it now with all the swelling, you're gonna love it five months down the road. So don't worry at all! It's your nose. If you are happy with it, that's the most important thing.

Thanks! What you wrote was very helpful to me.

This is GREAT news! It means that even your family (people that know how you look very well) didn't notice a difference. Your doctor did a fantastic job and gave you a natural result. You now have a pretty nose that doesn't look operated. Since you see a difference and are happy, this feedback from people should excite you even more.
My own father said he didn't notice a diiference and this is me here (pre op and 12 days post op)

Family can certainly be challenging, and they often can misjudge how their comments can affect you. Often their comments are made out of anxiety and caring, but they just come out wrong. Your best bet in this case is to wait it out and let them have another chance to comment when everything is fully healed. Even then, keep in mind that their motivation may actually be to let you know that you were always fine in their eyes just the way you were!

I did have reactions like this. Mainly from my now ex-boyfriend's father. He told me straight out he liked my old nose better. It didn't depress me, kind of cheered me up actually, made me feel like my nose before wasn't a total catastrophe. But still inside. I knew I was happy with my choice because I did not agree with him, lol.
Remember you did the surgery for yourself! Not anyone else. They just obviously didn't see the same flaws you did, they don't mean to be insulting .

i think its a common reactions especially from parents which the young people don't share the same generation. Asian family which are more conservative shows much weird reactions. lol. I know someone who had rhinoplasty and her parents was really shock when she came home, he's father said, she became a different person in terms of look in a good way.

OMG, I went through the same thing. It takes a good 6 months for you to see a big change and your nose will only really look what it should look like maybe in 12 months. Stay positive!!! I also had Arnica Montana. This helped with the swelling and aid in healing. I bought mine at http://www.amazon.com/shops/A39T96CWU5UTWY
