Hey everyone! 26 yr old female, very healthy and followed all preop and post op surgery care...
I'm pretty new to this board but I've been reading all the posts for the past 2 months! I have a few questions that maybe someone who has had rhino before can answer for me. (I'm pretty sure I'm just being paranoid but anything to help relax me.) So, on most successful rhino recovery forum posts, I hear a lot of people saying,*************** "the bleeding stopped within a few hours// I barely had to take the pain medication, All I took was some Tylenol/// I slept the first few days// I had no pain and barely any discomfort and just wanted to walk around...// I can barely breathe at all through my nose///I came back from surgery and just wanted to sleep///I had a really sore dry throat///"
These statements seem to be the common theme the first few days after rhino. For some reason though, I feel completely opposite then all of them!----
DAY 1, surgery day:
I had rhino and septoplasty yesterday around 11am. I woke up with the WORST headache of my life. The nurse gave me 500mg vicodin which slightly helped. My boyfriend drove me back to the hotel and I was wide wide awake couldnt sleep at all. Headache persisted and took 2 more vics before it went away. Had to change the drip pad every 30 mins. I could breathe PERFECTLY out of my nose. ( opposite from most I've read!!) No congestion at all. Once the nasty headache went away, I felt great!!! No sore throat at all, no dry mouth, barely any bruising at all, was talking and laughing with my boyfriend and had so much energy! (I did take it easy though, still). Bleeding pretty much stopped about 10 hours after surgery. Didn't get to sleep until 4AM! (I was wide awake and feeling totally normal, with no congestion)
So...here I am woke up from day 2 and things are totally different.
Once I woke...left side of my face and nostril felt great. I could still breathe perfectly!! Right nostril side of my face...different story. My upper mouth was throbbing. I had a terrible terrible headache that went all the way back around my neck. I felt a constant numbing throbbing inside my right nostril...with a few quick sharp pains every hour or so. The right nostril was also bleeding and still had to change the drip pad every hour (No blood at all coming from left nostril)
. Right side of face badly bruised, now, pretty swollen and right eye watering all day!! Can't breathe at all out of my right nostril and feel like so much throbbing heavy pressure is on it. I went back into the doctors office today and they were so amazing and nice and said this is all very normal I just have more drainage on the right side. They prescribed me demerol for the pain since I would have to take 2 vicodins every 2 hours just to stop the constant throbbing on my right side. Left side of face and nose, breathe PERFECTLY and totally fine barely bruised or swollen on the left!
So....is this normal? ? I just keep reading these recovery stories of young girls saying the bleeding completely stopped within 10 hours of surgery and they had no pain and felt great and didn't need any pain medication!! I can't imagine not taking any cause the headache and throbbing shooting pain and congestion on just the right side is super uncomfortable! Anyone else experience anything like this and is it just a normal part of healing? Any reasons why it would just be occurring only on the right side? Doctor took plenty of time with me today and said this is very normal and I just had more drainage on the right side. Sorry this is so long, thanks for everyone's advice and look forward to replies.
