This week, I went to a spa to get a quote for lip augmentation. The lady told me that, for Juvederm, the cost was $500 per syringe. My question is, how many CCs are in a syringe, how many CCs are appropriate for a lip augmentation, and do you have to pay for the whole syringe even if you don't need the whole thing. Can anyone shed some light on this?

One syringe is 0.8cc. The amount used depends on the current amount of fullness in your lips as well as what look you desire. It also depends on if you are doing your upper and lower lip or your upper OR lower lip. Many surgeons will have you pay for the whole syringe, and will allow you to use the remainder for your next treatment.

I have pretty thin lips as you can see from the attached photos so I think I'd like to my upper and lower lips. I particularly want to correct the asymmetry in my upper lip. Do you think I'll go through a whole syringe? I've attached a pic to illustrate how I'd like my lips to look.

The amount used depends on where you want fullness and how much. As I cannot physically see your lips, I cannot vouch for the amount necessary to create your desired ideal. You might if you want to go as full as the lips you have provided. Would lips that full suit your face properly? Would such full lips complement your features or simply be a trout pout-like eyesore? The lips you have provided as your ideal look nice, but would they look nice on YOU? That's the question!

I would definitely go with a whole syringe for your initial treatment. I had this done before and my dermatologist wouldn't even use more than one for the initial treatment..she told me if I wanted more she would do it (at a later date)..but flat out told me she refuses to do more than one for the initial and patients have gone elsewhere because of it. I would definitely use a reputable dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Don't go to those day spas, they generally don't know how to inject into the proper tissue layers from what I've read all over Yelp. FWIW, from my own experience, the change you are looking for could easily use 3 syringes. It's a very dramatic change.

I think it's best to be conservative, especially for your first time.

Please discuss this at length with your surgeon or reputable injectable administrator.

As I stated earlier, the lips you have chosen as your ideal look nice, but will they suit you?

Thank you so much for your feedback. I will definitely go to a PS and avoid the spa. To answer your question Robyne00, I don't know if the lips in my "ideal" would be appropriate on my face, so I'd probably go more conservative on my first visit. I think, more than anything, I want my upper lip to be even and symmetrical.

Cleopatra, thank you for your imput. Three syringes at $500 a pop, wow! And how long do the results last? Up to a year? There must be more affordable or more long-lasting options out there, right?

Juvederm lasts 6-12 months (6-10 mos on average). Do not be discouraged. I had Restylane which lasted 3 months (was suposed to last 4-6 mos). My lips were purple for almost a week post injection . Being conservative, especially for your first time is wise decision.

Also a spa is not the wisest place to go. In my opinion you'd be better off going to a plastic surgeon for administration or someone with verifiable credentials.

Trust me, you do not want lips as big as in that second pic... that won't look natural on you!

I would recommend paying a hundred or so more for Juvederm ultra plus, which usually lasts a bit longer. When I had mine done (I no longer do them now) I would use around 0.6 cc divided between the top and bottom, which is not much at all. Start with a little, you can always go with more later. Doctors will save a syringe for you too if you only want to use part of it.
