I'm now in my late 30's but I still have acne scars from my teenage years. I'm interested in doing laser skin resurfacing if it can dramatically improve them. Does anyone know on average how many treatments are necessary to do this usually? I'm an African-American female if that's makes any difference in the treatment plan.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I hear it can be anywhere from a couple treatments up to 8 to 10, it all depends on the severity and skin type. I know the smoothbeam laser works good on active acne but it doesn't sound like that's your problem right now.

I think everyones different I don't scar easily but my husband has such rubber tough skin he can get a little boo-boo and you'll still see it a year later. I think it all depends on your skin to begin with.

For acne scar removal, on some patients dramatic results can be seen within 1 or 2 treatments, and others take several more treatments. The number of treatments will depend on the severity of the scars. Since you are African-American, most laser procedures would be risky to use on your skin. There is a laser procedure called Coolaser, which is safe to use on dark skin tones and has a shorter downtime than other laser treatments. I highly recommend this method to darker skin types, since there is not the risk of skin discoloration as there is with other lasers. Search "coolaser" online for more info.

I had a full-face laser resurfacing and I've had Fraxel about 3 times. The laser resurfacing (done in the 90's, with anesthesia and about 2 weeks down time) made some difference - slight, but I was desperate for even a slight improvement, so I'm thinking of doing it again. The Fraxel did nothing. I don't know what your skin is like, but I've done a lot of research and tried a lot of things, and I am sorry to say that I think the truth is that nothing will ever fully get rid of them - only somewhat soften them, depending on your situation. I am a very light skinned white person, so supposedly I am a perfect candidate for these things. But I don't think anymore that my skin will ever be smooth. PLEASE be careful as an African American, because I hear that you could get a lot of discoloration.

Sorry to be kind of negative, but I was told with every procedure I've done that I would come out with smooth skin, and it was all lies. EVERY PERSON WHO DOES THESE PROCEDURES LIES. I'm sorry to say it, but they want your money. It doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, just know that they are lying and that your skin won't be smooth - just smoothER (and maybe not even that). For about a week or two, your skin will look wonderfully smooth - but that is only the swelling. That's when they take the photos, so it looks miraculous. The photos should be at least 2 months from time of procedure to give any kind of accurate difference. They will lie and say the photos are from months later. Plastic surgery is not a business that attracts ethical people.

Blueberry, I hate to admit it but you are totally right

The other thing I've come to realize about lasers is they probably don't accomplish anything that a chemical peel (that's much cheaper) can do. From what I understand, both of them are supposed to peel the top of the skin.

Why pay hundreds for a laser when a glycolic cleanser peel cost less than $20

I had Micro Fractional Co2 Laser. It worked amazingly on my acne scars.
It was done as a single treatment. I had a burning sensation lasting for three days.
For 1 week there was slight discomfort.
I am happy with the results now.
