California plastic surgery physical examination requirement

Why does California now require a physical exam to get plastic surgery as of 1/1/2010? I don't agree with this whatsoever. My surgery was booked last November for this month and yesterday my doctor's office called me to say I need a physical. I am not some Donde West!!!!! 23, slim, non-smoker, no health problems at all and now I have to pay money for an early physical to get my surgery?

It actually IS called the Donda West Plastic Surgery Law. I understand you don't want to have to shell out extra cash, but it is intended for your safety. Truthfully, many people die each year from PS, and because they are not the mother of Kanye, no one cares. Many people are able to get around required procedures prior to PS. I have seen people firsthand not have to take psych examinations (mandatory for many surgeries and in many states), pay extra to speed up surgeries or to get unnecessary or outrageous surgeries, get out of physical exams (which are required by many surgeons as protocol), etc. Sometimes we have health problems we don't know about, or new ones arise. I understand your frustration, but compliance is key with any surgery. Here is some info about the new law:

Donda West Plastic Surgery Law To Take Effect In California
Sunday December 27, 2009
A new law will take effect Friday in California, and is commonly known as the Donda West Law, named after Kanye West's mother, who died after elective plastic surgery.

The law is designed to insure that patients have a complete physical exam prior to having plastic surgery. In West's case, a full physical may have prevented her from having surgery, as she had cardiac issues after the procedure that contributed to her death.

Plastic surgery is often looked at as very safe, because it is not required for health reasons. For this reason, it is often not taken as seriously as other surgeries, but complications-even death- can happen, just as with any type of surgery. A physical exam is a standard for many surgeons, so this law makes sure that plastic surgery patients are afforded the same safeguards in California as other surgical patients.

I am in San Diego and my doctor didn't mention this to me. Does rhinoplasty count for this?

Rhinoplasty should absolutely be included.

For years many California plastic surgeons have been requiring physical exams, because if for no other reason their insurance policies made it mandatory! :)

I can see why it upsets you, but there are a lot of people out there getting surgery that shouldn't be due to their health.
