When my sister was born with a crease in her eyes the first thing her aunt saidv was 'oh what a blessing that's two thousand saved on future surgery' I was 15 and still remember. She was talking about her not having to get double eyelid surgery. This was back home in South Korea where everyone gets it. I think the official number is 30 or 50% of the population believe it or not. Now I wouldn't be 'blessed' according to my aunt since I wasn't born that way. Now that I live in Irvine California I've thought about getting the surgery done but Im not sure how I feel about this. Do you think this is Westernization to the extreme? Not only do we dress like you guys but we do surgery to look like you too? It doesn't seem right to me because it isn't done for medical reasons its not like getting a double eyelid surgery helps you see better. Its only cosmetic and cosmeti to look like a different race's eyes. And here I am in plastic surgery headquarters falling into the same trap. Do I do this or not? Is it wrong or is it the same as wearing makeup to look better? I don't know Im torn. I do know I don't want to contribute to the whol westernization of the world because our differences is what makes this world the amazing place it is.

A controversial topic for sure. Everyone seems to have a different viewpoint but here's mine:

If you are getting cosmetic surgery for the purpose of trying to change that feature to look like it's from a different ethnic group - then yes, that is going too far.

If you are getting cosmetic surgery to improve something only and it has nothing to do with ethnicity, then I don't feel it's wrong. Many Asians naturally do have a double eyelid so why is it erasing ethnicity? That would be like saying those Asians naturally born with a double eyelid are less Asian than one who doesn't have it... that's crazy! Just like people come in all different shapes and sizes, so do our ethnic group we belong to. Take me, I'm Polish and we generally have bigger more blobby noses. But there are tons of full blooded Polish people who don't. The argument can't be made here that the ethnicity is being changed where there are many others in your ethnic group that already have it. Now if you were African and trying to lighten your skin to the point of Michael Jackson's that would be insane, you can't say that would be natural for yourself or your family. I know I'm all over the place here but does all this make any sense?

Being that I'm Asian myself I'm thinkign about the surgery and nope I don't think there's anything wrong with it. How is it any different from anyone putting on mascara to make their eyes look bigger? It is the ultimate of that so to speak but I don't want to get it done so I can look white or "westernized" I just think it would look great on me. My mom naturally has a double eyelid and she is beautiful so what's wrong with me doing that same thing? Is my mother selling out because she has it naturally? Come on now there's nothing wrong with 99% of the people that get it. If you get it done to look white as mentioned above of course I think that's nuts, but that is not the reason most of us Asians get this surgery at all.

there's nothing wrong with that!!!! people just do it to look better a double eyelid surgery makes your eyes look more awake and white people use makeup to get that look so it cant have anything to do with erasing asian ethnicity!

I see your guys point but regardless I think Asian double eyelid surgery IS pushing the envelope nonetheless.
