I'll share my experience for the benefit of those thinking of getting this procedure.
So ever since I was young back in elementary school I was made fun of because of my ears not only in school but also from some family members, this continued through middle school and in high school, though not as often but needless to say I had enough and wanted change.
So about 15 yrs ago when I was about 18/19 yrs old I discovered that a local Plastic Surgeon in my city performed Otoplasty.
Back then no one really had internet and computers weren't as mainstream, so I didn't do any research. I was young and naive.
So I had a consult got caught up in the excitement of finally being able to chenge my ear protrusion and booked my surgery for $1000 (that's all) for everything !!
I had the surgery in a same day clinic and I was put to sleep, it took effort for me to save the money having a crappy paying job and also in mustering up the courage since I had a traumatizing accident when I was very young and couldn't stand the thought of blood.
Needless to say the surgery was a failure my ears looked almost the same as before except one ear was now protruding more then the other.
So I talked to my P.S. and he agreed to do a revision, but this time it was in his office and I was awake for the revision !!
As he was going to start I became nervous, my heart was pounding and I was becoming faint, the doctor stopped, sounding irritated he called the nurse to help me and he continued with other patients that were in the waiting room.
Later he came back and did the surgery, I can't tell you how much it sucked to feel and hear someone cutting and tugging on my ear, I'd never put myself in that position again.
So allowing my ear to heal once again, wearing the headband the outcome was basically the same, no real difference, all this effort for nothing !!
About five years later my ears were still a concern, I was still getting made fun of by a few people here and there so I knew that I wasn't exagerating, I was determined to fix my ears.
So I did some research though it was limited because the internet was still not as popular back then as it is today, But anyways I decided to have a consult with a Plastic Surgeon who's practice was in a neighboring state, actually it was Rhode Island.
I had saved money for almost a year and had about $4000 saved.
I figured I would fix my ears and have rhinoplasty since I didn't really like my nose (a big nose is common on my mothers side of family).
I had my consult which cost me $75.00.
I spoke with the doctor, he showed me a couple of his before and afters and overall he left a good impression on me. I talked to him about doing Rhino also which he said he felt I would benefit from.
I asked how much for the Otoplasty? he told me $3600 was the cost, everything included !!! WOW over three times the price I paid the other Doctor.
So I agreed to do it, and obviously I couldn't afford the Rhinoplasty.
We'll I had the surgery and all went well, I prayed that this time all would go well. I went in for my follow up, had the headwrap removed and I was amazed at how well he did, my ears were almost flat to my head, there was no doubt this doctor knew what he was doing.
Don't get me wrong my ears arn't perfect, I wish they were smaller ,but the doctor said that he would of had to cut a pie shape out of my upper ear and stich it closed and that it would leave a visible scar, so I said lets just go with the pinning back which I'm content with.
So now I have money saved and I'll be getting my rhinoplasty in aprox. 5 months. but with a different doctor because actually I forgot my last surgeons name since it's been like 10 yrs.
So with the end of my story... I say if you take anything away take this.!!! 1. DO NOT
choose a surgeon based on location, remember my first boched Otoplasy the P.S, was in the same city, shop around. 2. DO NOT
Choose a surgeon because of cost, remember my first surgeon charged my $1000 for everything that included his fee
, the surgery clinic fee
and the Anesthesiologist fee
!! 3. DO YOUR RESEARCH
You want a Plastic Surgeon that knows what he/she is doing and treats you with care. Just an FYI
, with my surgery I did have some sharp pain in my ears once in awhile, it would come and go sporadically, this lasted about a year so don't worry if you experience the same it will stop. And also the first few times I took a shower when the water hit my ears it was like hundreds of needles were hitting my ears, so expect them to be sensitive and try to avoid direct hit from shower
