Breast reduction and breastfeeding Hi everyone! I want to know if breast reduction and breastfeeding after is possible? I want to get mine reduced but I’m 22 and have not had kids yet. {Sidenote : I don’t plan to anytime soon either} I am a big health nut and I see more evidence that natural breast milk is more nutritious for babies. That’s why I would like to be able to breastfeed or at least have the ability to. Would it be a bad idea for me to go through the reduction surgery then? |
This link might help to answer some of your questions: BFAR - Breastfeeding After Breast and Nipple Surgeries |
There is a 3x increased chance of inadequate milk production following any kind of breast surgery according to the Institute of Medicine. So if you would like to breastfeed (which I agree is best for your baby) then you should probably avoid breast implants. If you're looking to increase your bust size there are all kinds of non-surgical breast enhancement techniques, using bust enhancing bras and silicone padding. You would be surprised at how effective they are! :) |

Unfortunately breast reduction is likely to at least reduce your ability to breast feed. In most procedures ( there are several different types), the nipple and areolar with the connecting ducts are left on some of the remaining breast tissue. It may be that you can partially breast feed; however, no one can guarantee you that you will be successful. Internal scarring may cause some obstruction to flow and/or the amount of remaining , connected breast tissue may be insufficient. I tell every young woman with whom I consult, that if breast feeding is a priority, she should wait to have her reduction until she has finished nursing her children. |
