I am looking into a breast reduction. I am trying to get insurance to cover it due to big boobs. While I am there I figured lipo on belly. The dr said the breast reduction would require overnight stay in hospital and that the hospital is where the surgery would take place if the insurance covered it. As for the lipo he said it would cost me an additional 6500 if done at the same time but if I chose to do it separately in the ambulatory center it would be 5500. I understand insurance does not cover lipo at all and I am not looking for them to however I would have thought having a separate procedure done during a covered procedure it would be less expensive not more. Does this sound right?
I think it cost more to have separate procedures because it is two complete separate procedures and that the doctor will see you twice and perform them. In contrast, the combined procedure will cost less because they can do both of them at the same time, thus, the doctor don't have to perform surgical procedure on you twice.
See another doctor! That doctor is crazy. It should be much cheaper because your insurance will be covering the costs of the hospital stay and at least part of the anesthesia. It's also safer because you only have to be anesthetised once, and you can recover once instead of twice. Definitely get another opinion.
I think you definitely should voice your concerns to your insurance company. This definitely seems like your surgeon doesn't know what their talking about. See what other surgeons you can go to that are covered by your insurance.
If you are planning to have breast reductiona and lipo all at once then I agree with Susan and Jacob. However, I'm no expert and I don't know exactly your case so you might wanna ask for a second opinion from a recognized surgeon. As for your insurance, they will usually send an evaluator to check if they would cover your surgery. They might disapprove in covering your lipo. just a thought.
