- Check Board-Certification: A doctor's board-certification is the best indicator of his or her training in a particular medical or surgical specialty. Look for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the only Board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to certify doctors in the specialty of plastic surgery.

- Check ASAPS Membership: ASAPS membership ensures that a doctor not only is ABPS-certified (or, in Canada, certified in plastic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.) but also has significant experience in cosmetic surgery. ASAPS membership is by invitation only.

- Check Facility Accreditation: Cosmetic surgery can safely be performed in a hospital, a surgicenter or an office-based surgical facility: Current published data show that accredited office-based facilities have a safety record comparable to that of hospital ambulatory surgery settings. However, the majority of office-based surgical facilities are not accredited. Another advantage of selecting an ASAPS member is that all ASAPS surgeons operate in accredited, state-licensed or Medicare-certified facilities.

- Check Hospital Privileges: Before granting operating privileges, hospital review committees evaluate a surgeon's training and competency for specific procedures. Wherever the surgery will be performed, be sure that the surgeon has operating privileges in an accredited hospital for the same procedure being considered.

- Check Reliable Sources: Asking a patient's primary care doctor for recommendations is a good place to start, and friends may offer suggestions; but the surgeon's board-certification should always be verified independently by contacting the American Board of Plastic Surgery . I learned by researching that all plastic surgeons have their area of specialty - In my case I am still trying to find a facial plastic surgeon.

This is all such great information. We still found it difficult though to find the exact page to go to within the states sites to verify a doctor's license. So we created a table that contains the page where the user can perform their search:

In Victoria Australia, a plastic surgeon by the name of Dr. Morris Ritz from the Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgeon, was sued in an out of court settlement that his ex-patient won. She was severely mutilated by this doctor and although the television show might be deemed 'tabloid' there is nothing like the legal team of a highly commercial and successful TV show to make sure the facts are RIGHT. There is no way this segment would have aired if Mrs. Mullins was not telling the truth. However, in the time it took to tell her story, Dr. Morris Ritz was promoting himself on national television as the Macrolane (lunch time boob jab) pioneer of Melbourne, and continues to promote himself all over the net as the breast surgeon you can 'trust'- all of this despite causing a perfectly healthy woman to lose an entire breast and so much more! Now, Dr. Ritz is also a 'proud' member (as his internet promotion states!) of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Australian Medical Association, and that does not say much for 'board' qualified surgeons. And in Australia, it is almost impossible to check the records of a surgeon based on malpractice law suits, because most of the time payouts involve a clause the patient has to sign to state that they will not discuss the case. So, for anyone who wants the FACTS about this surgeon, Dr. Morris Ritz, then you can find them.
